Paper Abstract

Beyond The Map London

Beyond the Map is a platform that effectively allows people to take self-guided tours of the cities of the world. Its originality lies in its’ clue-based approach, combining geocache style hints, historical overlays, discounts and 3rd party offers and the ability to see the ‘less trodden path’ of cities with exciting stories to tell. To date, it has developed from in-person tours to gain a proof of concept (and gain feedback), into a mobile responsive web application. The immediate plans include

Problem

Traditional guided tours vary in quality and aren't flexible, as you have to be in one place at a time. They also tend to stay on the well-trodden tourist path and rarely venture off it to show people the true city and the hidden history that is there. Technology is also rarely used on more traditional tours, especially not immersive technology.

Target Market

They don’t have to book tours of variable quality; they’re not pinned to being somewhere at an exact time. They’re in control of taking their own city tours.
Flexibility is key to people’s lives, especially when on holiday, as schedules change, and group members go off and do different things. With the BTML concept people can download the walks and partake at a time that suits them and with a group of people who they are comfortable with.

This is a business that will start with a pay-as-you-use ‘per tour’ pricing strategy.

The mobile application will be free to download but will require in-app purchases – these namely would be the tours which are purchased.
We will gamify achievements on people completing different maps and visiting different landmarks, etc.

We will be providing self-guided global city walks you can do via your smartphone and that will take you off the beaten track, which the larger tour guides tend not to do. We will also have Tavern and Speakeasy Tours and a family-orientated walk that identifies family film locations within the navigational route. We will be using AR to bring history back to life along with the ability to use HealthKit Monitoring data.

We want to give the 30 million visitors to London annually another option where they can go off the beaten track and see the real city that they are visiting and not just the typical tourist attractions. We will give them a real insight into life in the cities they visit and the history of the places that they see. This will all be done through immersive AR via your smartphone. No need for glasses, just point your smartphone and see what the area looked like in years gone by.
